Wedding budget in France: what does a wedding cost in 2026?
Published 7 October 2026 · 5 min read

The average wedding budget in France was €19,293 for couples who married in 2025, according to the annual wedding industry report from Mariages.net. That figure excludes rings and the honeymoon and covers roughly 90 guests, which works out at about €215 per guest. Treat it as an indicative average: depending on the region, the season and your guest list, your own wedding could cost half that or a good deal more.
Below you'll find how that budget breaks down, where prices differ across France, and a simple method for building a budget that holds up.
The average wedding budget in France
Weddings in France have become noticeably more expensive. In 2022, a Cofidis/CSA study put the average at around €11,000. Three years on, it's close to €20,000. Rising food prices, general inflation and fierce competition for summer Saturdays all play a part.
There is plenty of competition, too. INSEE, the French national statistics office, counted around 251,000 marriages in France in 2025, and a large share of those couples want the same weekends between June and September.
The most useful number to remember is the per-head figure: roughly €215 per guest. Your guest count drives almost every other cost, so it is a far better planning tool than the headline total.
How the budget splits by item
These are the average amounts couples spent on each item (Mariages.net). They're ballpark figures and will vary with region, season and day of the week.
| Item | Indicative average spend |
|---|---|
| Reception venue | €5,500–6,500 (village hall from ~€600, private estate from ~€3,000) |
| Catering | ≈ €110 per person, including drinks and cake |
| Wedding dress | ≈ €1,650 |
| Photographer | ≈ €1,300 |
| Videographer | ≈ €1,200 |
| DJ / music | ≈ €1,200 |
| Groom's suit | ≈ €1,100 |
| Flowers and decoration | ≈ €950 |
| Stationery | ≈ €425 |
| Hair and make-up | ≈ €200 |
Catering is the big one: it can account for up to about 40% of the total. At €110 a head for 90 guests, you're already looking at over €9,900. The format makes a real difference: a plated sit-down meal usually runs €60–150 per person, a simple buffet €30–80, and a standing cocktail-style dinner (cocktail dînatoire) €50–100. Our guide to wedding catering costs in France goes into more detail.
A note on venues: a salle des fêtes is a municipal village or town hall you can hire, often very affordably, while a domaine is a private estate, frequently with gardens, a barn or a château, and priced accordingly.
Regional differences
Where you marry matters. According to Mariages.net, the regions with the highest average budgets are:
- Nouvelle-Aquitaine (including Bordeaux and the Dordogne): €21,641
- Île-de-France (Paris and its region): €20,794
- Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur: €20,333
These are also the areas many international couples dream of: vineyard estates, Provençal bastides, châteaux and coastal villas, all in high demand in peak season. If you have your heart set on a July Saturday near Bordeaux or Nice, build in some headroom. Browsing reception venues in Bordeaux alongside other cities is a quick way to see the range.
Building your own wedding budget
Start with the guest count
Everything flows from it: venue size, catering quote, tableware, drinks, stationery. Going from 120 to 90 guests at the average of €215 a head saves more than €6,000. Draw up a "must invite" list and a "would be nice" list before you request a single quote.
Agree on your priorities
Pick the two or three things that matter most to you both, whether that's the food, the photos, the party or the setting. Put the money there and be more modest elsewhere. Couples who want to dance until dawn tend to invest in a strong DJ; others would rather have a well-known photographer.
Keep 10% aside for the unexpected
Take your total, set aside 10% as a contingency (extra hours, last-minute guests, forgotten equipment hire, price changes between quote and date), then share out the rest using the table above as a guide. Keep a simple spreadsheet listing each supplier's quote, the deposit paid and the balance still due.
Compare several quotes
Prices for similar services can vary widely. On Eventéo you describe your wedding once and receive up to 5 quotes, free and with no commitment, from suppliers whose business registration (SIRET number) and professional liability insurance (RC Pro) we've checked.
Where to save without it showing
A few ways to trim the bill that your guests are unlikely to notice:
- Choose a Friday, a Sunday or the shoulder season. Venues and suppliers have more availability and are often more flexible on price.
- Rethink the meal format. A generous cocktail-style dinner or a well-presented buffet often costs less than a four-course plated meal.
- Focus the flowers. Spend on the top table and the ceremony arch, and use candles and greenery elsewhere.
- Bundle services. A DJ who also handles ceremony sound, or a caterer who supplies the tableware, saves on separate travel and set-up fees.
- Go digital for save-the-dates and keep paper for the invitations.
- Trim the guest list. It remains the single most effective lever.
What not to cut: the quality of the food, guest comfort at the venue and well-run music. Those are what people remember.
When you'll pay: deposits and balances
You rarely pay for a wedding in one go. Most suppliers ask for a deposit when you book, often many months in advance, and the balance closer to the date. In France the deposit may be called arrhes or acompte, which have different cancellation consequences, so always check the wording on the quote. Because the venue and caterer are booked first, a sizeable chunk of your budget needs to be available early.
On Eventéo you book online by paying a deposit of 20–50% of the price, set in the quote (30% by default). The balance is charged automatically 7 days before the wedding, and the supplier is only paid 2 days after the event, so you can report a problem before then. The cancellation conditions are shown before you pay.
Alongside your budget, plan a simple cash-flow timeline: what goes out, and when.
In short
A wedding in France costs a little over €19,000 on average, about €215 per guest, with real differences by region and season. Fix your guest list first, agree on your priorities, keep 10% in reserve and compare quotes for every major item.
